The Value of Mentorship for Graphic Designers and Creative Professionals
As creatives, we’re always learning—whether it’s refining our craft, growing our business, or navigating the challenges of our industry. But learning isn’t just about gaining knowledge; it’s about knowing how to apply it, adapt it to your situation, and getting support along the way.
Looking back at my 12+ years running my business, I spent years (I’m talking years) trying to figure everything out on my own.
Taking courses, reading blog posts, checking out how other designers were structuring their services attempting to emulate them, signing up for webinars that promised to teach me the fool-proof way to market my business…
I was constantly piecing together advice from various different sources, all of which had different perspectives and goals.
And did it work? Well, yeah. Kind of.
I'm now an established designer and business owner who is running a successful and sustainable business that aligns with the type of work and clients I love working with and my desired lifestyle.
But it took a very long time, lots of burnout, running on a hamster wheel, and seasons of extremely high stress and anxiety to finally find my groove and make choices that helped me create an intentional foundation for my business.
Full transparency? My breaking point came in 2020. 8 YEARS after I started AllieMarie Design.
I hired a business coach and we worked together to transform my business into something that truly aligned with my values and my life as a mom of a 1-year old and intentional business owner.
Investing in that business coach was 100% worth it. But if I had a mentor to guide me earlier on in my business... someone who could share their experiences and help me avoid common pitfalls, work through tricky client situations, and work with me on my mindset? I would've been able to move forward with so much more clarity and confidence earlier on.
Instead of spending years second-guessing myself and overthinking every decision in those early years, I could have focused on growing a sustainable business, working with more better-fit clients, and honestly, making more money!
My personal experience of going at it alone and the experience my mentees have inside the Anchor + Grow Mentorship showcases the true value of mentorship and the impact it can have on your business and your life.
Why Mentorship Stands Out
Mentorship bridges the gap between learning on your own and making a big investment in support. It offers the personal experience that you crave when you're in your early years of freelancing, without the structured curriculum of a course (business isn't one-size-fits-all anyway!) or the high cost of one-on-one coaching that you may not be ready to invest in.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU RECEIVE MENTORSHIP?
Real-world perspective from someone who has walked a similar path, navigated similar challenges, and can offer insights that go beyond textbook advice (or your typical Google search!), helping you avoid common pitfalls and make informed decisions.
An ongoing relationship and trusted sounding board for making career decisions with confidence, allowing you to process ideas, challenges, and opportunities with an experienced mentor who has your best interests in mind. Plus, the ability to adapt to your evolving needs, so you have someone to turn to as you grow.
A safe space to ask questions, share struggles, and gain confidence, fostering a supportive environment where no question is too small or insignificant.
Personalized guidance tailored to your unique path, ensuring that advice and direction align with your specific challenges and aspirations.
Honest feedback from someone who understands your industry and wants to see you grow, offering constructive critiques that help refine your skills and confidence.
Encouragement to take action so you don’t stay stuck in uncertainty, pushing you to step outside your comfort zone and implement what you’ve learned.
How to Find the Right Mentor
How do you find the right mentor for you?
First, clarify your goals. Are you looking for business guidance, creative feedback, or industry connections? Defining your priorities helps you find the best fit.
Next, look for alignment with someone whose business and/or experience matches your aspirations and whose values resonate with you. You could search on social media (Instagram or LinkedIn may be good options, depending on your industry), by visiting local networking groups, or by doing a simple Google search.
Then, consider the mentorship format and your learning style. Some mentorships are structured, while others are more organic. Finding what suits your learning style best is key. There are community-based, group mentorships as well, which can provide multiple perspectives and a sense of camaraderie as you grow.
